Lidl, the Germany-based grocery store chain, is coming to Bristol Township.

Last Thursday evening, Bristol Township Council approved plans for a 31,000-square-foot grocery store with 140 parking spaces at 7843 New Falls Road across from Appletree Place and abutting the neighborhood on Courtland Lane and Keston Drive.

Verizon, which owns the seven-acre property, will split the site into two lots. Verizon would retain the building and portion of property closer to the Lower Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority building and Lidl would demolish the existing 29,000-square-foot building on their side, according to the plans.

Kyle Smyth, the real estate manager for the Lidl and coincidently a Levittown native, said the site might not be the traditional spot for a grocery store, but the 31,000-square-foot building fits with the company’s U.S. expansion plans.

Lidl, which rhymes with “needle,” proposes places two entryways and exits along New Falls Road. One would include a traffic signal across from Appletree Place and the other would be a right in, right out access point a few hundred feet away.

The plan calls for stormwater management improvements for the Lidl and Verizon properties.

Smyth said Lidl has 11,000 stores across Europe and now 130 in America, with eight in Pennsylvania. He added that the company will have less deliveries than most grocery stores because of their central warehousing model.

Lidl has expanded across the East Coast and has plans to add 50 stores and 2,000 jobs by the end of 2021. The company plans to build a location along York Road in Warminster. Lidl operates stores in Philadelphia, near Lansdale in Montgomery County, and across the river in Burlington Township, New Jersey.

Lidl is a competitor to fellow German brand Aldi, which has locations at Edgely Road and Mill Creek Road in Bristol Township and off East Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township.
