The inmate who died earlier this week while in custody at the Bucks County Correctional Facility died by suicide.

Paul Steele, 46, of Warminster Township, was found unresponsive in his cell at the county correctional facility in Doylestown Township late Wednesday afternoon. He died by hanging, according to Bucks County Coroner Meredith Buck.

Steele was being held on a burglary case out of Tinicum Township. He was arrested on December 9 and being detained on 10 percent of $75,000.

The coroner’s office, which conducted an autopsy Saturday, took part in an investigation by the Bucks County Department of Corrections and Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.

County officials said Friday that Steel was found unresponsive in his cell on Wednesday.

Prison medical staff were called and began lifesaving efforts. Arriving medics were unable to revive Steele, officials said.

Steele is the correctional facility’s fourth inmate suicide since 2015, according to statistics reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

The county prison has been largely closed in recent weeks because of a COVID-19 outbreak among staff and inmates.
