PennDOT said the closure is part of the first phase of the ongoing Route 1 project that is expected to eventually revamp part of the highway in Middletown Township and Langhorne Manor Borough.

This weekend’s closure is due to removal of the Bristol Road overpass.

“This one-night bridge removal operation will generate noise that will be heard in neighborhoods within close proximity of the bridge. This work is being expedited over a single evening to reduce long term nightwork operations and inconvenience to the neighborhoods,” PennDOT said in a statement.

PennDOT officials stated removal of the bridge at this point in construction will push forward the competition date for the first phase of the project, which is due to finish in late 2021.

Traffic will be detoured I-95 and Woodhaven Road. Local traffic will follow posted detours around the closure area, according to PennDOT.

A Bristol Road bridge over Route 1 will be constructed before the entire project is completed.

Allan A. Myers Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $95.1 million first phase of the project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
