Harry S. Truman High School in Bristol Township has been awarded a $149,278 grant to increase educational services for students considered historically underserved.
The money has been set aside for Additional Targeted Support and Improvement under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The funding was announced by Democratic state representatives Tina Davis and John Galloway.

“ESSA requires states to develop plans to designate schools for support and improvementย based onย the performance of individual student groups in key areas, including academic achievement and growth; graduation rate and English learner progress; and student success factors such as regular attendance and chronic absenteeism. Student groups include race, economically disadvantaged, English language learners, and students with disabilities,” according to state officials.
โThe coronavirus pandemic has affected schoolsโ ability to teach their students, especially their most vulnerable student populations,โ State Rep. Tina Davis said. โThis funding will help Truman put systems in place so that all students are academically engaged during this challenging period.โ
The grant money comes from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, which designed money for education and authorized state government to determine the use of those funds.

โWe donโt know what the fall will bring in terms of the pandemic, so I am glad that Truman will have the funds needed to ensure that it can continue to educate students, regardless of the circumstances,” Gallowayย said.
