In times of trouble and great stress, a break is needed from time to time.
On Easter Sunday, residents in Middletown’s Levittown section received a short break in the form of the CoronaCruise, a rolling car show that traveled through Snowball Gate, Forsythia Gate, and Red Rose Gate neighborhoods.

Christian Gallardo, a newer Levittowner, organized Sunday’s CoronaCruise and a previous one.
Gallardo is a self-described “car guy” who has an old Corvette that he wanted to get out of the garage and onto the streets.
With the help of social media, the first CoronaCruise in early April was a hit and drew 60 cars from classics to newer tricked-out rides. Building on that momentum, the Easter Sunday CoronaCruise had 90 vehicles of all types, including a fire engine.

Gallardo figured the rolling show was a way to break the monotony of the mitigation efforts and meet some of the local car buffs.
One of the benefits was that people could come outside, remain socially distant, and also enjoy the show.

“Older people who hadn’t been out heard about it and came outside,” Gallardo said.
Another plus, Gallardo said, was that people with special needs or disabilities were able to get out front and see the rolling car show.
“We thought it was great,” said resident TJ Dalton. “Our whole house went out on the lawn to watch. All the drivers stayed in their cars, drove by waving and smiling.”

Dalton called the CoronaCruise a “good distraction from everything going on right now while maintaining the social distancing guidelines.”
Resident Camille Shelhamer said the rolling show was great.

“I stopped making dinner to stand outside and share in the experience. My family loved it,” she said.
All the drivers were well-behaved, and between the dozens and dozens homes passed, there was only one complaint, Gallardo said with a chuckle.

Other neighborhoods are already talking about similar events, Gallardo said.
