Sixty-four years after they went up, the walls of Lafayette Elementary School began coming down.
The Bristol Township School District is taking down the elementary school that closed for good in 2016. Premium Excavating and Demolition of Falls Township was hired in 2018 to abate toxic materials and demolish Lafayette and Maple Shade elementary schools, which was recently torn down.

Final demolition work began at Lafayette off Fayette Drive last week and has seen steady progress this week. The center portion of the school was turned to rubble by Wednesday afternoon and work to tear down the two wings of the building was underway.
A mosaic, which was created with the help of students, sat in the lobby of the school and was exposed to the fresh air and sunlight for the first time on Wednesday.
The district is looking to sell the 20.9-acre site that sits against a neighborhood and county park property. A previous offer to buy the site fell through.
