This week, the Falls Township Board of Supervisors unanimously awarded contract to Jimmy’s Tree Landscape Contractors LLC for the tree trimming and removal of ash trees impacted by the emerald ash borer.

The emerald ash borer is an invasive small metallic green beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan in 2002. Adult beetles eat ash foliage, but the tiny larvae feed on the inner bark of ash trees, which disrupts the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients, essentially killing the tree.
Across the country, the emerald ash borer is blamed for killing more than 40 million trees.
Supervisors Chairman Bob Harvie said the tree removal is concentrated on handling the problems resulting from the Ash Borers. Where possible, he said new trees would be planted to replace those removed

Harvie noted that over the past several years the township has planted about 700 trees.
According to Township Manager Peter Gray, some of the pricing bids made by Jimmy’s Tree Landscape Contractors LLC. is less than the township had paid previous tree vendors. The company’s half-day rate is $975 and full-day rate is $1,780. The emergency hourly rate is $330, as compared to the $425 emergency hourly rate paid to a previous contractor and the crane hourly rate is $225 per hour as compared to $350 per hour previously.

The Penn State University College of Agricultural Sciences reports that the first emerald ash borer in Bucks County was found in Warring in 2012. From there, the insect has spread across the county.
