Gusty Winds Help Fuel House Fire

A Middletown house fire was fueled by gusty winds Monday evening.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 800 block of Strawberry Lane around 9:15 p.m. and arrived to find heavy flames showing from the residence.

Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company Chief Frank Farry said there were multiple calls to 9-1-1 reporting a fire centered in the garage. Pushed by gusty winds, the flames spread to the rest of the home.

The fire was started after an aerosol can fell from a shelf in the garage and burst opened near a space heater, which sparked the blaze, Fire Marshal Jim McGuire said. He added that the fire was accidental.

Video posted by the Penndel Fire Company shows the wind-driven blaze and evacuation tones sounded to clear firefighters from the burning home.

Two firefighters were treated for burns and smoke inhalation but were not seriously hurt, officials said.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, the home appeared to be heavily damaged and part of the roof had collapsed.

A backhoe was being used clear debris from the garage as investigators from the fire marshal’s office surveyed the scene.

The Newport, Newportville, Parkland, Penndel, William Penn, and Yardley-Makefield fire companies assisted Langhorne-Middletown crews. The Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad also was at the scene.

Two doors down from the home damaged Monday evening, a residence is being rebuilt after a November fire that was caused by hot ash.
