It wasn’t love at first sight, but Philadelphia-area sports fans have grown to love the Philadelphia Flyers’ new mascot Gritty. This is true of Jay’s Steak and Hoagie Joint owner Jay Green who has acquired a soft spot for the furry orange monster with large googly eyes since his worldwide debut last September.

The limited-time $11 sandwich for hockey fans who want to celebrate the Flyers and enjoy a tasty lunch or dinner will go on sale this Wednesday at Green’s shop at 1205 Highland Avenue, Parkland, PA 19047. The special sandwich will be sold through the end of the month.
The “Grittzel” features Jay’s Steak and Hoagie Joint’s beloved cheddar pretzel roll, chopped burger meat, sloppy joe from Jay’s one-of-a-kind recipe, piping hot cheese whiz, and curly fries on top.
“The Grittzel mixes Philly toughness with the gritty attitude that makes the area special, something the Flyers have,” Green said. “After the success of the Eagles-themed ‘Wentzel Dip Sandwich,’ I played around after a Flyers’ game and created the Grittzel.”

For years, Jay’s Steak and Hoagie Joint and its customers have given back to the Lower Bucks County community. Last year, portions of the sales from Jay’s Steak and Hoagie Joint’s menu have gone toward purchasing close to 6,000 pounds of food for those in need. Since he started the business, that number has totaled around 50,000 pounds of food.
