Wawa revealed more this week on its plans to build a convenience store and gas station along East Lincoln Highway in Middletown

The company is working to build a 5,051-square-foot store with eight gas pumps with a canopy at the 1.8-acre former Paul Burn Auto Center at 639 East Lincoln Highway, just a few lots away from I-295.

Developer Pinegood Middletown LLC presented an overview of its plans and received several variances from the Middletown Zoning Hearing Board on Wednesday evening.

The current Wawa plans, which still have to undergo further land development approval and receive a waiver to build gas station at the commercial site, show the addition of an intersection along East Lincoln Highway across from the Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad building. The signalized intersection would ensure drivers entering and exiting the Wawa could make a left and right safely.

The plans also show Wawa adding a water basin for improved stormwater management. The basin would be surrounded by trees. The site backs up to township-owned property and a flood zone.

Wawa officials said the development would remove the existing features on the property and also level it out.

The Middletown site replaces one that Wawa had worked on with developer Tom Verrichia for several years in Penndel. At that location, the Wawa site would be constructed along with a a  a 14,700-square-foot retail store, likely a pharmacy, on the property that sits on West Lincoln Highway and is bordered by Durham Road and Legrande, Bellevue, and Park avenues.

The proposed Middletown Wawa is less than a mile from a Wawa store on Trenton Road and 2 miles from a store and gas station on Oxford Valley Road, both in Middletown.
