As the Bristol Borough Christmas Parade was coming to a close Sunday afternoon, the Delaware River was creeping into the packed Mill Street Parking lot.

The river spilled its banks and left flooding in parts of the parking lot. Witnesses told LevittownNow.com that people rushed to check on their vehicles and quickly moved them to higher ground.

However, some cars did appear to be in water that was higher than their floor boards.

Joe Rakowski, owner of Mill Street business Noble Earth, said he used his pick-up truck to haul people to their vehicles as the water rose.

“Fortunately between us and another vehicle, we were able to get a lot of people to their cars swiftly and out of harms way. There are still a few cars out there and many cars had water enter the interior, many of whom are employees of various establishments down here,” he said.

The borough recently installed signs at the parking lot warning that there could be river flooding.

The flooding came after heavy rain that started Saturday and ended early Sunday morning. Rainfall amounted to 3 to 4 inches and more is expected Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from 10 a.m. Monday until late at night.

“The heavy rain has ended but creeks and streams are still running high in many areas with places still near or above flood stage,” forecasters said.

According to the Delaware River gauge at Trenton, the river had swollen from just over 11 feet at 8 p.m. Saturday to about 14 feet as of 8 p.m. Sunday. The water level is expected to rise to about 16 feet by Wednesday morning.

In addition to the Delaware River flooding, the Neshaminy Creek spilled its banks and closed Core Creek Park in Middletown.
