A team of students from Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School in Falls Township recently won the Pennsylvania State STEM Design Challenge Elementary Division.
The requirement for the competition was that teams had to use 1,400 K’Nex pieces or less within two hours. Each team is required to present a journal and blueprint for their project.

The Pennsbury School District students created an automatic hand soap dispenser that runs on hydroelectric power generated from the tap.
“The competition fits perfectly in our STEM unit on renewable energy,” said Kathryn Royal, team coach and Pennsbury gifted support teacher. “Each year we travel to the Exelon Education Center in Fairless Hills to study energy. This year we connected our trip with the Thermo Fisher Scientific STEM competition. The students worked together to meet the challenge.”
The students on the team were: Daphne Klose, Patrick Longman, Daniel Morone, and Nicholas Torres.

The Eleanor Roosevelt team competed against 1,220 groups from across Pennsylvania. Nearly 5,000 students took part and more than 1,708,000 pieces of K’Nex were used.
The Eleanor Roosevelt team won the regional competition held at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit 22 before moving to the state challenge in Harrisburg.
