Middletown employees and volunteers worked together on Saturday morning to plant 20 trees on the greenbelt along Cobalt Drive South in Levittown.
The township purchased and planted 20 trees for the occasion as part of “Treevitalize,” an initiative conducted by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society. The initiative aims to plant 1 million trees in Pennsylvania. To date, Middletown has planted more than 300 trees, said Middletown Parks and Recreation Director Paul Kopera.

The trees planted on Saturday are a small contingent of trees that will replace the trees taken down along the greenbelt in recent years, Kopera explained.
“It just makes me glad to see a well formed tree to provide shade and happiness at the same time,” Kopera told LevittownNow.com.
Steve Donohue, a longtime member of the Middletown Environmental Advisory Council, has been leading two tree plantings a year in the township for about 20 years.

“It is just great to be out doing community work and meeting new people,” he said.
The trees in Cobalt Ridge are the newest addition to Middletown’s contributions to the “Treevitalize” program. The last planted trees were planted in November at Detective Christopher Jones Memorial Park on West Maple Avenue.

Middletown usually purchases about 15 to 20 trees for each planting event and receives about 10 volunteers for the three-hour planting session.
