The regular book sales and events at the Levittown Library are integral in keeping the community resource functioning.
Regular book worms and library goers are almost certainly familiar with the sales and flea markets that are held biannually at the Bucks County Free Library branch off County Way in Bristol Township’s Levittown section. In the summer or winter, a smaller sale is usually held to clear inventory.

The money raised from these sales and flea markets help the Friends of the Levittown Libraryย support the facility by hosting guest speakers, musicians, and maintain new circulation items.
“We obviously like to raise as much money as we can so that it can go right back to the library,” Friends of the Levittown Library spokesperson Jeff Fiedler said.
Fiedler has been involved with the Friends of the Levittown Library for more than 15 years. He was recruited on a fluke when he was shopping at one of the sales and the president of the organization asked him to stay and break down the sale. Since then, Fiedler has been a regular at the meetings and sales, even though he lives in Washington Crossing.

“I’ve just always been interested in libraries and find them to be a great resource,” Fiedler said. “I can never pass a library without going in.”
The sales are for more than just books, though. The library sells donated vinyl records, CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs, and Blu Rays. The Friends of the Levittown Library accepts any type of audio or visual media.

“It seems like no matter what kind of format we get donated, we can find buyers for it,” Fiedler said.

The book sale and flea market brings hundreds of people to the library throughout the sale. On the Saturday of the sale, a flea market took over the parking lot. Food and other vendors lined the lot and visitors picked their way through as the day wore on. The flea markets have become a tradition alongside the book sale going on inside of the library.
The flea market and outside activities of the libraries usual sales are run by the Single Volunteers of Bucks County. The group staffs a few tables at the flea market.

“We like staffing the book sale, especially on beautiful days like today,” said Kathy Masulis of the Bucks County chapter of the volunteer organization.
“I never have a problem getting the numbers to staff this,” she explained.

The Friends of the Levittown Library continue to brainstorm ways to better serve their home library. Once each year, the friends of the various local libraries meet in Doylestown to swap ideas.
On April 28, the Friends of the Levittown Library is going to have another sale. Instead of books and other media, this sale is going to focus on handbags, costume jewelry, collectible dolls and more. The organization continues to try new things in order to better serve the library it calls home.
