Firefighters Respond To Trash Truck Fire At Yacht Club

The Edgely Fire Company responded to a call on Tuesday morning for the report of a garbage truck on fire at a local boating club.

The cause of the fire is unknown to the operators, Leck Waste Services, which operates out of Ivyland. According to a company spokesman, the fire started up after workers loaded a trashcan into the truck. Moments later, the rubbish in the truck was in flames.

According to the chief of the Edgely Fire Company, Joe Cavanaugh, the driver of the truck dumped the rubbish at the Edgely Yacht club, which sits next to the Bristol Yacht Club and moved the truck.

The dificulty of the fire, Cavanaugh said, was due to the large pile of burning trash. Responding crews utilized a backhoe to sort through the pile and extinguish the flames, Cavanaugh said.

An expedited ambulance responded to the scene to tend to the driver of the truck, who was found to be unresponsive. According to Cavanaugh, the driver underwent cardiac arrest and was then transported to a nearby hospital.

Responders were finished leaving the scene by shortly after 9 a.m. with the fire put out and the scene managed.
