A local veteran was honored with a Quilt of Valor by St. Mary Medical Center late last month.

Potzgo, who has been a St. Mary volunteer shuttle driver for over 20 years, was a master sergeant in the Air Police from 1948 to 1968.ย ย Quilts of Valor are given to service members and veterans as a thank you for their service, sacrifice and courage.
“We were thrilled to surprise George by recognizing him for his military service with a Quilt of Valor and to have his family and coworkers in attendance,” said Jim Woodward, St. Mary President and CEO.
In addition to the Quilt of Valor, Potzgo was recognized for his numerous military accomplishments, including receiving two Presidential Unit Citations, an Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and a National Defense Medal, among others. Mary Homer, of the St. Mary Data Integrity Department, read aloud a prayer when presenting the quilt.

During his time in the armed forces, Potzgo was stationed in Alaska, Texas, Germany, England and France. Two of his five children have served in the military; his son George is a Marine and his daughter Diane is in the Air Force.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, whose son Nat was deployed in Iraq at the time. The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts.
