A 33-year-old New Jersey man wanted for shooting his girlfriend’s ex-husband at a youth boxing event turned himself over to police.

Luis Medina, a resident of Maple Shade in Burlington County, turned himself over to detectives at the Falls Township Police Department Monday around 12:20 p.m. He was taken from the police station on Lincoln Highway and arraigned before District Judge Jan Vislosky on charges of aggravated assault, attempted criminal homicide, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of an instrument of crime and reckless endangerment.

Medina, according to court papers, pulled a gun after having words with his girlfriend’s ex-husband, Richardo Perez, at a youth boxing event Saturday shortly before 6 p.m. at the Pennsbury Racquet and Athletic Club on West Trenton Avenue in Falls.

Perez was hit with a bullet to the lower back and required emergency surgery. As of early Sunday, he remained at St. Mary Medical Center in critical condition.

Medina was with Perez’s ex-wife at the youth boxing event to see the woman’s son. Perez showed up and Medina pushed his hand away and words were exchanged, police said.

Witnesses said Medina indicated he had a weapon and the men went into the hallway at the Pennsbury Racquet and Athletic Club.

An acquaintance of Perez’s punched Medina in the face out of fear and Medina pulled his gun. He fired and Perez was struck, police said.

Medina fled the Pennsbury Racquet and Athletic Club. An off-duty Philadelphia cop tried to chase the alleged gunman, but he made off and was last spotted Saturday night near West Trenton Avenue and Plaza Boulevard.

Pennsbury Racquet and Athletic Club said in a statement the boxing event was held by an organization who had rented their facility and was meant to be a “fun outlet for the children to display their talents and raise money for a good cause.”

Medina was transported to the Bucks County Correctional Facility in Doylestown unable to post 10 percent of $200,000 bail.
