The Friday afternoon and early evening commute was a mess.

The snow that started falling around 2 p.m. left more than an inch by 5 p.m. From highways to side streets, the road surface was covered as vehicles crept along.

A slew of cars were reported off the roads and several minor crashes happened. On I-95, a crash south of the Bristol exit caused a lane restriction.

Forecasters were calling for 1 to 3 inches that will taper off by Friday night.
