The Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival will be taking to the water of Lake Luxembourg in Core Creek Park this Saturday.

The rain or shine event will kick off at 7:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day. While there is no cost to attend, organizers ask spectators to drop off a canned food donation to help local food pantries.

The third annual event that aims to “paddle out hunger” will donate all proceeds to the Bucks County Housing Group, which operates food pantries in Doylestown, Penndel and Milford Square.

“It’s really humbling that in just two years, this festival has raised $75,000 for this cause,” said Chris Wetzel, Vice President, BCDBA. “While this is certainly an impressive figure, it barely scrapes the surface of the need in this region. Our hope is that through this festival we can continue to chisel away at food insecurity in our community.”

More than 70 teams will be competing in this year’s Bucks County Dragon Boat Festival. In addition, numerous health tents, food trucks and eateries will be taking part in the festivities. Lee’s Lion club of Philadelphia will perform the Chinese Lion Dance and music from Bellevue Blue, a taiko drumming ensemble from Kyo Daiko, will entertain the crowd.

Dragon boats hold 20 paddlers who sit two-by-two in a 41-foot-long boat. The rear of the boat has steersperson and a drummer beats out the rhythm for the paddlers.
