Middletown Township has begun its replacement of approximately 3,000 streetlights with LED fixtures.
The replacements, according to township officials, will include 1,000 decorative colonial-style fixtures installed by municipal staff, and about 2,000 cobra head lights to be installed by contractors in the coming weeks.

The replacement of all the bulbs is expected to run through the fall season.
Township officials have noted that LED lights display clearer, whiter light with a better range, and may appear brighter than the previous lights used. The replacements will also create a uniform look in the township by dismantling the current varying technology and styles.
Middletown officials noted that the LED streetlights are also cost-effective, as they are more efficient, reduce energy consumption, and last up to 20 years, saving the municipality on maintenance costs.

According to the Township Manager Scott Sadowsky, the township expects to save $1.1 million over the course of the lights lifespan. This amount, according to officials, is the net gain after costs are subtracted.
