The Friends of the Levittown Library’s book sale brought dozens of people out Saturday to peruse about 3,000 items and enjoy a flea market.

The Friends of the Levittown Library, which support the efforts of the library on the county property in Bristol Township, host two book sales throughout the year. The August sale wasย  a little smaller, with about 3,000 items up for sale. These include fiction and non-fiction books, records, movies and kids books. The October sale runs for several days and has about 15,000 items up for sale, organization officials said.

The sale started as a “beach blanket sale” 25 years ago at the Levittown Library’s old location. Jim Puzo, who is still with the Friends of the Levittown Library, has been around since the beginning of those days where books were laid out on a blanket and sold for a quarter.

For Saturday’s one-day sale, Puzo said the organization would be happy to raise more than $1,000.

The money from the sales go toward supporting the library’s summer programs and supporting donations to the Bucks County Free Library system. So far, the organization has given nearly $200,000 to the system.

The Friends of the Levittown Library are always looking for more volunteers to head up programs and help out in events like the book sale. The group meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in volunteering can go to the group’s website.

Outside the library, rain held off Saturday for the flea market.

Carol Herzek, a craft vendor, was at the library’s market for the first time and said she was very impressed with the constant flow of people coming through.

The next big sale for the Friends of Levittown Library is set to kick off on Thursday, October 12, and will run to the following Monday.
