More than 200 participants for a 5k and fun walk back in April have helped raise $5,308 for the Falls Township Youth Police Academy.

Extreme Fitness Personal Training owner Martin McLoughlin, who organized the April 23 event on Headley Place in Fallsington, presented a check to Officer John Yeager at the Falls Township’s Board of Supervisor’s meeting last month.

Yeager, who runs the 10 day youth police academy for high school aged kids during the summer months, explained the program gives cadets the opportunity to get hands-on activities, learning experiences and physical activity at no cost. Aside from drill instructors, the previous 62 cadets became CPR certified, watched the Philadelphia Police Department Dive Team work in the Pinewood Pool, observed the work of police SWAT officers and K-9s, participated in military drills, learned teamwork and leadership and heard from numerous public service officials.

This year, the academy will take about 70 students, four of which have special needs.

“Being able to partner with Marty is an awesome opportunity for us to raise some money,” Yeager said.

McLoughlin told township supervisors that he already has planned a 5K for April 22 of 2017, and that he hopes to double the amount raised for the youth academy.

“I just want to support this program,” said McLoughlin. “I loved doing it.”

Yeager noted that another fundraiser to support the program will take place on July 8 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Stadium Bar and Grill at 198 Lincoln Highway in Fairless Hills.
