Another specialty shop opened on Mill Street to a large and enthusiastic crowdย last weekend.
Bristol Antiques Market is on the upper end of Mill Street near Pond Street. The 329 Mill Street address is now home to an eclectic gathering of antiques, handmade originals and more.

The store is owned by Karla Sloan, whose husband Andrew Sloan opened Sloan Thrift in 2015. Andrew’s opening pushed Karla into really wanting her own business. When she lost her job and 329 Mill Street became vacant when the former store closed in October 2015, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.
The market works by allowing vendors to set up a space. The vendors don’t need to be present to sell their wares. At the end of the month, vendors receive a check for everything they sold for the month,ย Sloan explained.
“There has been a great reception,” Sloan said of the market’s presence in Bristol. “There have been tons of extremely positive comments.”

Sloan admits that the fervor of the Small Business Revolution gave her the push to open. On the day before the announcement, she and Andrew signed the lease on the building.
Now with a family-owned business, Sloan can set her own work barometers. She is focused on giving back to the community, but also staying in close communication with her family.

“I think that’s what pushed us the most, the fact that I can stay with my family,” Sloan said.
“This is like a dream come true,” she explained.
Coming from El Salvador, owning her own business is truly incredible, Sloan said.

In addition to keeping the close-knit family vibe, the vendors who come in feel loved as well.
“This is like a dream come true,” said one vendor, Margo, whose wares can be found on the second floor of the shop.

The store’s grand opening had more people than Sloan expected. Looking to the future, she plans on continuing to help to community and be a strong institution on Mill Street.
