A change to simplify signage is underway by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
The simplification comes in the form of removing the red, yellow and green lights to show E-ZPass users that their units were read successfully. According to a press release, the change comes as new federal guidelines are being enforced. The first changes will come at the Harrisburg Interchange (exit 242) and will be expanded.

“Signal light technology currently in use has become outdated and cumbersome,” explained Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Chief Operating Officer Craig Shuey. “As the Commission prepares to update toll equipment in the lanes with more modern hardware and software, we are incorporating new federal signage standards. While the removal of signals may cause some initial confusion, it will soon become the norm as our customers adjust to the change.”
As the work continues, drivers can expect to see the decommissioned lights wrapped in yellow plastic at interchanges and EZ-Pass only exits north and east of Philadelphia.
The release says that the change should end up simpler for drivers and that drivers should proceed through effected interchanges at posted speeds.
