The HHGregg store in the Lincoln Plaza shopping center on East Lincoln Highway is closing.

The company said Thursday that it is closing the Middletown electronics store as part of a plan to shutter 88 “underperforming” locations around the country.

The store is expected to close as soon as mid-April. Liquidation sales of current inventory are expected to begin soon.

While the number of employees at the store that is adjacent to the Oxford Valley Mall was not released, HHGregg said 1,500 people company-wide will be losing their jobs.

“We are strategically exiting markets and stores that are not financially profitable for us,” HHGregg CEO Robert Riesbeck said. “This is a proactive decision to streamline our store footprint in the markets where we have been, and will continue to be, important to our customers, vendor partners and communities.”

The roughly 30,000-square-foot Middletown store opened in 2010 and took the place of Circuit City when it closed in early 2009.

The Indianapolis-based company operates about 220 stores around the country.
