Croydon Mother Sentenced For Hitting Motorcyclist, Fleeing Scene

A Bristol Township woman involved in a 2015 car accident was sentenced to one and a half to five years in state prison after she left the victim lying in the road and fled the scene.

Sarah Hurd, 37, of the township’s Croydon section, was driving without a license at the time of the crash that happened atย  at Fourth Avenue and State Road in Croydon. According to a press release from prosecutors, blood tests confirmed Hurd had used cocaine shortly before the crash.

The crash took place on July 22, 2015 as Hurd was apparently having an argument via phone when she turned into the victim’s motorcycle and sent him reeling. After the collision, Hurt left the scene and when police found her, she was kneeling in a parking lot.

The victim – a 46-year-old Bristol Township man – suffered a a fractured tibia and fibula. He was assisted at the seen by a passing motorist who called 9-1-1.

Earlier this year, Hurd pleaded guilty to aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, as well as a number of lesser charges.

In her sentencing hearing, Hurd explained to Judge Jeffrey Finley that she didn’t know what to do and that she just kept going.

Hurd also apologized to her victim in court during the sentencing, prosecutors said.

โ€œI am sorry for all the harm I have caused to you and your family,โ€ she said, and added that she is seeking help for her drug and mental health issues.

Hurd’s victim did not speak at sentencing.

Hurd’s defense counsel, Ellis Klein, asked Finley to only impose a county sentence so Hurd could be closer to her children. Finley cited Hurd’s history, and said he could not in good conscious impose that sentence.

โ€œYouโ€™re a human being. And (the victim) is a human being,โ€ Finley told Sarah Dawn Hurd before imposing the sentence. โ€œAnd you left him lying in the road.โ€

Assistant District Attorney William Murphy said Hurd, a mother to three young children, had three prior drug possession convictions and a conviction for possession with intent to deliver.

Finley also placed Hurd on five years of concurrent probation and ordered her to pay $3,864.79 in restitution to the victim.
