Quick-acting neighbors and an up-to-date alarm system are being credited with helping firefighters respond quickly to an apartment fire Wednesday evening.
Firefighters were called to the Lakeview Terrace Apartments on South Olds Boulevard in Falls Township at 7:38 p.m. Wednesday for an apartment blaze.

Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito said an alarm system at the apartment complex alerted 9-1-1 around the same time neighbors noticed smoke coming from the residence of a woman in her 70s.
The neighbors took the wheelchair-bound woman out of the apartment and used a fire extinguisher to fight the flames until firefighters arrived to finish the job, Dippolito said.
The flames were contained to the bedroom and left fire and smoke damage in the elderly woman’s apartment, the fire marshal said.

The fire, according to Dippolito , was caused by careless smoking.
No injuries were reported and no other apartments were damaged.

Dippolito credited the apartment complex with putting current fire alarm systems in their buildings, which gave firefighters an early heads-up on the blaze.
