Julia Santarelli took a year off from her studies at Temple pursuing a degree in media/broadcast journalism. During that year she realized her passion was not pursuing a career in media but learning a Japanese technique called Reiki (pronounced Ray Key).

Reiki has been used for 94 years to reduce stress and induce relaxation to help promote the body to heal using the channeling of energy by means of touch.
Santarelli, a Levittown resident, became interested in this technique while taking part in yoga and meditation. She is a certified Reiki Level 2 provider.
“Reiki balances out energy and allows the body to promote self healing. It changes your life. You can heal mental and emotional blocks,” Santarelli said.

It is called “smart energy”. In addition to relieving stress and aiding in relaxation, the benefits of this therapy also help manage emotional and physical pain in addition to promoting positive energy flow.
Santarelli used to suffer from severe migraines taking medication to offset the effects. Using Reiki has helped in managing the migraines alleviating the need for medication. She also uses it on her rabbit and chihuahua.

Santarelli uses touch and the 7 Chakras, which are the centers within our bodies in which energy flows to help facilitate healing, when working with her patients. Santarelli also stated hospitals are starting to take notice to this alternative form of therapy and using it with their patients to assist in pain management.
Santarelli practices at the Fairless Hills Health Center, located at 81 Crabtree Drive in Levittown which “deals with a lot of aches, pains, headaches, and disc problems”, according to Dr. Michael Gaffin, owner of the practice. Santarelli is not associated with the practice, however, “Dr. Gaffin has been nice enough to give me this extra space,” Santarelli said.
Dr. Gaffin stated, “I gave her an opportunity to be in a professional place and do her thing”.

“A lot of people who do get chiropractic done like the hands-on treatment and mine is basically a complimentary treatment to that,” Santarelli said.
