Shapiro beat out Republican State Sen. John Rafferty, a former prosecutor for theย attorney general’s office, to take the state’s top law enforcement position. Shapiroย is a lawyer who has previously never served asย a prosecutor or defense attorney.

Shapiro currently serves asย chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, a position he was appointed to last year by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf.

The new attorney general will take over the office after turmoil caused by former attorney general Kathleen Kane, who was recently sentenced toย 10 to 23 months in prison for committing multiple felonies.
