Pennsylvania has elected its new attorney general.
Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro, a former state representative and rising star in the Democratic party, was elected Tuesday to become the next Pennsylvania attorney general.

Shapiro beat out Republican State Sen. John Rafferty, a former prosecutor for the attorney general’s office, to take the state’s top law enforcement position. Shapiro is a lawyer who has previously never served as a prosecutor or defense attorney.
Shapiro currently serves as chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, a position he was appointed to last year by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf.
The new attorney general will take over the office after turmoil caused by former attorney general Kathleen Kane, who was recently sentenced to 10 to 23 months in prison for committing multiple felonies.
