The students at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School in Falls Township held a walk recently to benefit JDRF, formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
The event was the second annual walk for the cause at the school. According to Dan Lennon, an outreach manager for JDRF, the average school raises about $3,000. However, Roosevelt raised about $4,500 this first year of the walk and $3,500 this year.

The walk was first started after two students in the school were diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. The entire school came together with chief organizing done by Jodi Becker of the PTO.
Different grades were coded for different colors, and took to a large oval behind the school for 45 minutes to walk for juvenile diabetes. The actual walk was led by physical education teacher Brian Doron.
“[The walk] brings the whole school together,” Becker said.

“It’s an awesome experience for my child to see all of her classmates supporting her,” said Kelly Lewis, the mother of Kaitlyn Lewis, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes two years ago while in second grade. “It’s nice that we’re educating other people too.”
