Chipotle Mexican Grill has backed away from plans to build a new restaurant in Middletown.
Last year, Chipotle was planning to build a 2,150-square-foot eatery with outdoor seating in the parking lot of Lincoln Plaza Shopping Center on Lincoln Highway, which currently features HHGreg, TJMaxx and DSW.

As part of the plan, Chipotle tore down the 3,600-square-foot retail store that stood at the location and submitted plans to the township.
In the time since, Chipotle pulled their proposal for the eatery and has not approached the township further about developing the site, Middletown Director of Zoning Pat Duffy said. He added that the rumor was the site needed more work than originally anticipated and the extra cost caused Chipotle to pass on development.
In the first quarter of 2016, Chipotle posted its first-ever quarterly loss. The loss comes after E. coli, salmonella and norovirus outbreaks last year.
