Former President Bill Clinton made a surprise visit to Lower Bucks County Saturday evening.

With just a bit more than 15 minutes notice, Clinton and his entourage arrived at the Irish Rover Station House on Bellevue Avenue. The eatery sits on a strip of Middletown that is bordered by both Penndel and Langhorne Manor.

Jim Daven, general manager of the Irish Rover, said Clinton visited around 5 p.m. and stayed for about one hour. He said the Democratic former president talked with nearly all the patrons and gladly snapped photos. Instead of ordering off the menu, Clinton took two pretzels Daven brought in for the staff.

Clinton’s visit to the area came after stops to campaign for his wife, Hillary, in Delaware County, Montgomery County and Philadelphia. Clinton has been speaking on behalf of his wife’s presidential bid since she announced her run.

Philly.com reported one man shouted “best president in the world!” as Clinton walked through the eatery. A customer told LevittownNow.com that Clinton visited people inside and outside the eatery.

“He was just such an unassuming type of guy. He was just like a regular guy in nice suit,” Daven said.

Being a former president and part of his wife’s well-funded campaign, Clinton brought along a Secret Service escort with a half dozen SUVs and the Pennsylvania State Police.

Daven said Irish Rover staff found out about the visit only about 15 minutes before the 42nd president of the United States visited. After a sweep by a Secret Service agent, Clinton and his motorcade pulled up.

Clinton didn’t just meet with customers, he also took time to meet with kitchen and wait staff at the popular eatery.

Daven said the visit made for an interesting evening at the Irish Rover.
