Gov. Tom Wolf’s office says the Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) system will track more than 500 PennDOT trucks and 200 contracted trucks through the 511PA.com website.

โ€œDuring winter weather, interstates and expressways are our top priority,โ€ PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards said in a statement. โ€œThat means that we often move trucks from lower-traffic roads onto interstates, and those trucks wonโ€™t be shown on 511. Additionally, due to differing staff schedules, storms or equipment usage, the location of all of the trucks will not be visible at all times.

PennDOT officials said the public will be able to see on-duty crews in near real-time.

The new system is part of a $1.4 million project to use state plow equipment more efficientlyย and reduce salt usage.

Across the state, PennDOTย maintains about 40,000 miles of roadway.
