Acting Lt. Ralph Johnson, who is currently leading the Bristol Township Police Department’s patrol division, has completed schooling that is expected to help him on the job.
Public Safety Director Robert Coulton announced recently that Johnson graduated from the 22-week online School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University.

Here’s how the police department explained the school:
The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in a total of twenty-seven core blocks of instruction and additional optional blocks during each session. The major topics of study include: Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation.
Johnson, who took the class with 27 other students, is currently overseeing the patrol division of the department.
“The Bristol Township Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Acting Lieutenant Ralph Johnson’s attendance at this program. Many of the program’s graduates go on to achieve a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies,” Coulton’s statement read.

Johnson, who has served in law enforcement for 29 years, has worked with town watch groups and a federal task force in the past. He resumed street patrol work in 2014 and held the acting chief position until May 2015.
The department only has two lieutenants since Guy Sava retired last year. Johnson was appointed to the acting job after the retirement and said he plans to take the upcoming civil service test for the permanent lieutenant position.
