A tractor-trailer filled with peanut butter flipped onto its side in Middletown Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened on the northbound Route 1 ramp onto Maple Avenue (Route 213) around 1:05 p.m.

The truck, which is registered in Indiana, is believed to have taken the ramp to fast and overturned, police said.

Crews from the Parkland, Penndel and the Langhorne-Middletown fire companies were dispatched to the scene to cut out the windshield of the truck to free the driver. The driver was freed after about 20 minutes and transported to the hospital by the Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company Chief Frank Farry.

“He’s banged up but he’ll be okay,” Chief of Police Joseph Bartorilla said of the truck driver.

The large orange truck will have to be emptied before it can be removed from the off-ramp, Farry said.

The off-ramp is expected to be closed through Thursday afternoon.
