Falls Township officials will be looking to expand the municipality’s community garden through participation in the PECO Green Region Open Space Program.

The grant, which provides municipalities with amounts up to $10,000, seeks to improve the quality of the environment by promoting environmental education and conservation; preserving open spaces; protecting endangered species; and encouraging individual and organizational energy efficient efforts.

The funding, according to PECO, can be used with other funding sources to cover a wide array ofย expenses associated with developing and implementing such open space programs.

“Recognizing that the preservation of open space in our communities is crucial to the quality of life, PECO is committed to assistingย our communities with their ongoing efforts to protect, acquire and improve open lands,” PECO noted on it’s website.

The community garden, which has a growing waiting list, currently houses 46 plots of raised beds available for free throughout the season for residents to grow and harvest their own flowers, herbs, and vegetables.ย Due to recent popularity, officials within the Parks & Recreation Department have had to limit requests to only one plot per family.

Director Brian Andrews ย noted that the expansion through the grant will add another 13 plots to the community garden for little no cost through the use of grants.

“I know they’ve been looking forward to expansion,” said Board President Bob Harvie. “It’s been a neat addition to the park.”
