Despite a chilly rain, volunteers from Advocates for Homeless & Those in Need (AHTN) worked Tuesday to prepare an emergency shelter to house the area’s homeless on the coldest of nights this winter.

A handful of helpers unloaded the nonprofit’s new bus and placed 55 cots, bedding, bins of clothes and personal hygiene items in the ground floor of Emmaus Road Lutheran Church on Bristol-Oxford Valley Road in Middletown’s Levittown section.
Karen Mineo of AHTN said the shelter at the church will be activated once Bucks County officials put a “Code Blue” advisory into place. About 50 people can be accommodated at the emergency shelter and will be picked up in AHTN’s bus that was purchased through donated funds.
The mission is simple: help Lower Bucks County’s homeless population on the winter’s coldest nights.

The group is always looking for volunteers to staff the emergency shelter and donations, AHTN founder Penny Martin said.
