Bucks County authorities said last weekend’s drug take-back event netted 7,130.73 pounds of unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs.

Police officers and members of the community gathered Saturday at area police stations and stores to collect the drugs that will disposed of by the federal government.

By 10:50 a.m., two people had already been to the Tullytown Borough Hall to drop off bags of medication, said Cathy Giorgio, a volunteer for the Bucks County Medical Reserve Corps. Giorgio along with Officer Kyle Brierly were manning the Tullytown collection in the morning.

Even though many municipalities have permanent drop boxes to dispose of excess medications, advertised collection days like Saturday are important because they bring the issue to “public awareness, it reminds people,” Giorgio said.

In Bristol Borough, the turnout was about the same, with half a dozen people attending the drop off by 11:30 a.m. “It’s definitely a great service for the community, and they definitely take advantage of it,” Sgt. Joe Moors said. “It’s a successful program here in the borough.”

Officer Ed ‘Brien of Bristol Township police said the take-back day is ” important for the community to get rid of unneeded prescriptions.”

Since Bucks County started holding drug take-back events, a total of ย 59,975.26 pounds of over-the-counter and prescription medication has been collected.
