The organization, which seeks to eliminate hunger and food insecurity and increase access to nutritious foods for low-income children, families, and seniors,ย has a fundraising goal this year of $63,250.ย The organization will be able to provide 100,000 prepackaged, shelf-stable meals to the Bucks County Opportunity Council’s network of 27 food pantries and 6 senior centers if they meet their goal.

Both the Delaware Valley University’s Hope of the Harvest Charitable Garden and the Rolling Harvest Food Rescue will also be able to provide fresh, local produce to pantries if the fundraising goal is reached. According to United Way, remaining funds will be donated to the pantries to obtain lean protein and other perishable items such as milk and butter that are crucial but rarely donated. The goal for 2015 is a 15% increase from last year, according to a recent press release.

For an organization like United Way, donations from the public are crucial to it’s success. Donations can be made online here, or dropped off at any First Federal of Bucks County or First Savings Bank of Perkasie location. Donations may also be mailed to the United Way office on 413 Hood Boulevard in Fairless Hills, please include the subject line ‘BKO Hunger’

โ€œWe believe that in a community like ours, no child should go to bed hungry,โ€ said Marissa Christie, chief development officer for the United Way of Bucks County. โ€œNo family should have to choose between food on the table and a roof over their heads.ย  No older adult should have to skip meals so that they can afford medication. BKO Hunger changes everything for people in need.โ€

United Way works alongsideย nonprofits, businesses, and networks of food pantries and local farmers to ensure that the best products are provided to pantries, at the lowest possible cost to donors.
