The editors of Neshaminy High School’s Playwickian student newspaper have won yet another journalism award.

Editors Gillian McGoldrick, Reed Hennessy, Jackson Haines and Madison Buffardi were awarded the University of Oregon Ancil Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism last week. Chicago Tribune reporters David Jackson, Gary Marx and Duaa Eldeib; and Arizona Republic journalists Daniel Gonzalez and Bob Ortega were also honored for their work.

The Playwickian editors have been recognized nationally for taking a stand on the high school’s Redskins mascot. The editors have banned the mascot’s name from being published in The Playwickian. Their decision caused much debate in the community.

โ€œThese student and professional journalists carefully considered the consequences of the work and stood by the decisions they made,” said Tim Gleason, director of the Payne Awards and a journalism ย professor.

The award is worth $5,000 and focuses on ethics and courage in reporters.
