The explosion of an industrial dryer on Thursday afternoon caused several smaller fires.

A fire alarm call at Abington Steel on Bordentown Road in Falls Township came in around noon and was quickly upgraded after officials discovered there had been an explosion, Falls Township Fire Company Chief Mike McClellan said.

The chief said roughly eight fire companies rushed to the scene and help extinguish several spot fires around the dryer, which McClellan compared to a large oven.

“The smoke was a bigger issue, but there were also several spot fires,” he said.

Fire Marshal Rich Dippolito said he suspects a reaction to an item placed in the dryer caused the explosion.
