The empty Kmart at 1776 E. Lincoln Highwayย in Middletown may soon see new light.
The Kmart could soon become a CarMax. CarMax, which has already received approval from the Middletown Zoning Board, must next receive approval from the Middletown Board of Supervisors.

Should the CarMax be approved for the site, Director of Zoning, Planning and Engineering for Middletown Patrick Duffy said the existing Kmart building would be demolished and a new sales and service building would be built.

The sales and service building would be estimated at more than 17,000 square feet. The existing parking lot for the site would remain.
CarMax is seeking two variances for the 12.47 acre property, one to allow a 57 foot decrease in lot frontage and another to allow two wall signs that would total 82 square feet.

The Kmart closed in spring 2014. When the store closed, 87 part- and full-time employees lost their jobs.
Kmart leased the store from a property management company.
