Massive Cargo Ship Runs Aground

A cargo ship traveling the Delaware River ran into its banks Wednesday afternoon.

City of Burlington, New Jersey police confirmed the incident and said there were no injuries. The frightening-looking grounding of the ship happened north of the Burlington-Bristol Bridge and across from Bristol around 2 p.m.

6abc reported the ship, sailing under the Liberian flag, lost propulsion before it crashed ashore.

According to video and pictures from the scene, the ship is named Agia Irini. Records indicate the cargo ship is more than 620 feet long.

Police said there was no damage, aside from a depression in the mud and sand.

The Agia Irini was removed from the shore in Burlington less than an 30 minutes after it ran ground.  According to MarineTraffic.com, the ship was just south of Bensalem moving toward the Atlantic Ocean as of 4:45 p.m.

The ship was reportedly traveling from the international port in Falls Township.

New Jersey State Police and the Coast Guard are handling the incident. Officials from the Coast Guard’s Philadelphia station were not immediately available for comment.
