Verizon is requesting several variances to build the 136-foot-tall tower behind the William Penn Fire Company station on Main Street. Officials from the telecommunications company have told residents the tower is needed to strengthen coverage the borough and surrounding area.
Residents, many opposed to the plan, packed the March zoning meeting and voiced their opinions.
Hulmeville Zoning Hearing Board Chairperson Douglas Harris told the public toward the end of the meeting that the board will review all the testimony and case law before making a decision.

According to statements by Verizon officials in 2014, the tower would help the fire company bring in around $21,000 a year. The money is needed to help fund the volunteer fire company that serves the borough and portions of Middletown.
The proposed tower is designed to look like a large tree.
