โ€œI feel so honored to be given such an amazing opportunity, I am still in shock, but I cannot wait to start meeting new people and getting the word out about my platform,โ€ Hughes said shortly after being selected.

The Miss Bucks County organization explains what Hughes’ role will be over the next year:

During her year as Miss Bucks County, Hughes will travel throughout Pennsylvania advocating her platform issue; ABCs for ASDs which stands for Activities and Afterschool Care for Children within the Autism Spectrum Disorder. She will talk to various government representatives, business leaders, community groups and citizens-at-large, urging them to get involved in the fight for more Activities and Afterschool Care for Children within the Autism Spectrum Disorder.

โ€œSarah embodies the qualities of a role model that young women and girls should have,โ€ said Cristina Guzman, president of the Miss Bucks County, Miss Montgomery County and Miss Liberty Bell Scholarship Organizations. โ€œSheโ€™s talented, ambitious and accomplished. We are excited about working with her this year.โ€

In addition to the title of Miss Bucks County, Hughes will receive a scholarship and the opportunity to compete for the Miss Pennsylvania title in Pittsburgh later this spring.

Hughes, daughter of Terry and Liz Hughes, is a student at Nazareth Academy High School and plans to attend college for a nursing degree come fall.

This year’s pageant was the first in 15 years, according to organizers.
