At the next Bristol Township Council meeting on Wednesday, March 25, President Robert “Bob” Lewis Jr.’s seat will be empty in honor of the longtime public servant who passed away over the weekend.
The council is expected to recall Lewis’ work in the township where he lived nearly all his life. Lewis graduated from high school, was employed as a manager with Verizon, worked with little league teams and lived with his wife in Croydon up until his death.

On Monday, black and purple bunting was hung from the front of Bristol Township’s Municipal Complex on Bath Road in memory of the beloved council president and former mayor. The flags even flew at half-mast.

Soliciter Randy Flager said council Vice President Troy Brennan has assumed Lewis’ responsibilities following his death. He noted the council will have to vote for a new president and appoint a resident to fill Lewis’ seat on the governing body.
Due to Lewis’ more than two years left on his term, a special election to fill his seat will be held this November, Flager said. The person who wins the election will fill out the remaining two years on Lewis’ term.

“The main problem we have: we lost a man who loved Bristol Township,” Flager said.
Several council members told LevittownNow.com on Sunday that Lewis’ passing came as a shock to them and they will miss the “grandfather” to their council.

“He was so patient; he was so respectful even when people were not so respectful to him or the council,” Flager recalled on Monday.
This Thursday’s previously scheduled council meeting was postponed to March 25 because Township Manager Bill McCauley will be away at a conference.
