Middletown Township police are investigating whether the wrong-way driver who caused a six-vehicle crash on Route 1 was intoxicated at the time.
The driver, who has not yet been charged with any crime, ended up driving southbound in the northbound lanes on Route 1, Chief Joseph Bartorilla said.

The crash ended up happening in the area of the ramps that lead to I-95.
Video from LevittownNow.com reader Gianni Bro shows what appears to be a vehicle driving the wrong way on Route 1. About one minute into the video, screeching tires can be heard and the accident happens.

The chief said he was not sure how long the driver was on Route 1 before the accident happened.
A warrant for the driver’s blood was filed in district court but was not immediately available for review.

Firefighters from several volunteer companies had to extricate two people from two different cars. Officials said the wrong-way driver suffered the most serious injuries. Both people are expected to survive.
The crash closed Route 1 for several hours while investigators worked the scene.
