According to Pennsburyย Art Teacher Kelly Washington, most students don’t have extra time outside of activities and schoolwork to give back to the community, the Empty Bowls Fundraiser has instead, brought the needy community right into their classroom.
On Wednesday evening, dozens from across the community gathered at the high school in Falls Township to purchase handmade ceramic bowls and enjoy a homemade soup and bread dinner, all in support of a local food pantry.

Those who attended in exchange for a donation of $10 to $15 were asked to keep the bowls. The bowls were made by students in the art department, while the soup was prepared by students within the family and consumer sciences department.

Washington, as part of a requirement for her art students, asked each student to make 10 bowls in exchange for 50 classroom points. “A lot of my students came in tonight and even bought the bowls they made,” she said.

The Lester Bahrt Food Pantry, previously named the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, was the lucky receiver of the donations. The food pantry is housed at the First United Methodist Church in Falls Township and helps to regularly feed over 200 families each week. “This is overwhelming, it is so fantastic,” said Nancy Delso of the pantry. “It warms my heart to know young people are doing this kind of community service.”
The fundraiser, which began two years ago, is a creative initiative used by high schools throughout the country as a way to help eliminate hunger in their local communities.
