To meet employers’ demand for skilled workers, Bucks County Community College is offering a metalwork manufacturing training program for unemployed or underemployed Bucks County residents that begins in April.

The training is free, but students must first meet certain criteria to qualify. An information session will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, in the Student Commons of the Lower Bucks Campus, 1304 Veterans Highway in Bristol Township.
Representatives of companies looking to hire workers with these skills will be on hand to answer questions as well. These local employers will participate in selecting candidates for the program. Efforts will be made to connect those who successfully complete the program with local employers.
This is the third time the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center has offered the metalwork manufacturing training program. Members of the first class, which completed training in October, have found entry-level positions in the Bucks County area thanks to the skills they learned and connections they made in the program. The second class is currently in training.

Requirements for the program include:
- Must be a Bucks County resident, and a U.S. Citizen or possess a Green Card
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must pass a drug and alcohol screening, background check, and a physical test
- Must have reliable transportation to commute to training and to a variety of industry field trips
The program is funded through a federal Community Development Block Grant distributed by the Bucks County Commissioners. The goal is to provide training to develop the necessary skills to pursue a successful career in our local manufacturing companies.

The 12-week training program begins April 6 and consists of four days a week in class, and one day a week off-site for manufacturing facility tours and field trips. Classes are held at the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center, 310 George Patterson Blvd., Bristol, Pa. Successful graduates will be prepared to take the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Certification Exam for Measurement, Materials, & Safety Level I.
