It looks like residents will have another opportunity to voice their concerns over a proposed liquid hazardous waste treatment facility in Falls Township.
Elcon Recycling Services, along with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), previously held a public meeting and hearing at the Falls Township Municipal Building on December 10. The Israeli company plans to build their facility in the Keystone Industrial Port Complex.

Just recently the DEP extended the public comment portion of the Phase I siting application until Friday January 9, cancelling their January 8 meeting with residents. The previous due date was Friday December 26. According to the DEP, this decision was made based on requests by residents who attended the December 10 meeting and those who sent in additional testimony to the DEP’s Norristown office.
โDEP conducts a Phase I siting review to determine whether the proposed location complies with Pennsylvaniaโs exclusionary siting criteria for such operations,โ DEP Southeast Regional Director Cosmo Servidio said. โThis review happens prior to the company submitting a full operation and design permit application for any other environmental permits that would be needed.โ
According to the DEP, the Phase I siting criteria is put in place to protect surrounding water supplies, wetlands and flood hazard areas from a facility such as Elcon.

The public may continue to submit written comments to Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Team Leader, DEP Southeast Regional Office, 2 E. Main St., Norristown, PA 19401. Electronic comments may be submitted via email to RA-Hazwaste@pa.gov with Elcon noted in the subject line.
